SILK SCARF CARE

Silk scarves are the ultimate accessory and they’re quickly becoming more and more popular. The number of innovative ways to wear them continues to grow each day! However, despite being at the height of popularity, there’s no denying that looking after your vintage scarf can be a little hit or miss. This quick blog will walk you through all the steps you should take to help your favourite silk scarf live a long life.

The Big No's

Washing machines – just don’t even try

Perfume – Makes the colours bleed. Spray it on your wrists!

Over exposure to sunlight – makes it fade, store it in a draw

Dust – gets in the fabric and will need washing.

How should you wash a silk scarf?

As a second hand cashmere company that sells vintage silk scarves we know what we are doing when it comes to washing delicate fabrics. Wash silk scarves by hand unless the label says not to. They are far more delicate than cashmere and often contain many colours which may bleed. They also contain a hand rolled hem which adds to the delicate nature of the scarf. Hand wash the silk scarf in a bowl of tepid water and detergent, then rinse the scarf in a bowl of clean cold water. Lie your silk scarf down on a clean towel and roll it up inside the towel. Squeeze the towel to absorb the water from the scarf. After 20-30 seconds remove the silk scarf and hang it to dry. Iron the scarf whilst slightly damp to get the best results.

How to store your vintage silk scarf?

We think the best way to store a silk scarf is in its box without the lid on, hidden away in a draw where the sunlight can’t get to it but it can still breath. Always wash your scarf before storing to avoid stains becoming permanent. This will also allow you to wear it straight away when the time comes. Now you can relax knowing you've stored your designer silk scarf away properly...
